Perhaps I don’t watch enough television these days, but I have not noticed any sudden increase in the number of bald athletes or sports persons. I have the cart before the horse yet again. But just as WADA devises a new test, so the cheats develop new ways of hiding their steroids. One of the substances thought to mask the use of steroids was finasteride which is sold under the name of propecia. This is a perfectly legitimate drug used to treat male pattern baldness. It has an excellent track record for effectiveness and safety only requiring that the man takes one tablet per day for as long as he wishes to retain his hair. Thus, propecia was duly added to the List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. Over time, a number of athletes were banned for using propecia. Without exception, they all protested their innocence of any use of steroids or other banned performance enhancer. There was considerable litigation. WADA’s decision to remove propecia from its list reflects the emergence of evidence that propecia does not interfere with the tests for steroids nor mask their use in any way. This does not help the athletes who were banned for its use nor the unfortunate publicity that was given to their baldness. But one thing is undeniable. WADA publishes its list. Propecia was clearly identified on it as a banned substance and these athletes broke the rule. Whether the rule was a good one or not cannot change the wrongfulness of the athletes’ decision. As to those of you athletes who are threatened with hair loss. Propecia is a great product and you can use it without breaking the rules as from January 1, 2009.

Reduce the risks of breast cancer

The latest issue of the journal Breast Cancer Research, carries a study from the National Cancer Institute. This study examined the lifestyles of some 32,000 women through a questionnaire requesting details of their physical and leisure activities. This moved up from the more routine housework, through activity levels required in the workplace, to hobbies and interests involving activity. After collecting this information, these women were monitored for breast cancer and death over a period of some eleven years. But there was a strong trend to show that a high total level of vigorous activity reduced the risk of the cancer developing. So the first step in risk avoidance is the reduction of weight through a healthy diet and, where appropriate to keep the motivation going, the use of an appetite suppressant drug such as acomplia. Exercise also helps in the reduction of body fat so devising a combined program with all three elements balancing each other produces the best results. It’s important to recognize that the results find no reduction in risk through gentle exercise. Nor does exercise help where the BMI is above 25. It seems that women who are “lean” and who exercise vigorously achieve the benefit regardless of whether their efforts reduce their body weight. It’s an effect achieved because of the way their metabolism levels increase, not because they lose weight. The moral of this research is therefore clear. Post-menopausal women should first reduce their BMI to below 25, and then they will see the benefit from vigorous exercise. If you move out into the garden you are digging not pottering around with a hoe prodding at the ground and, when it comes to sports, you have to be strenuous. Cycling on the flat is out, find some hills to climb. Don’t just line dance, get into jiving. If you prefer a gym, go for aerobics. Then you will live a longer and healthier life. If you combine this with a diet and acomplia, the overall effect on your health will be enhanced.

Hundreds of people work on legislation as it works its way through Capitol Hill. Lawyers give advice behind the scenes. And the elected representatives decide on the politics of using power this way. Finally, after months of effort, a statute emerges. When you and I see a new law, we are selfish. If it doesn’t affect us, we don’t care. If it affects us, we often resent being forced to change. So when the government makes laws about what websites selling drugs should or should not contain, and how they should work, it affects everyone who is sick. In the US right now, there’s a big debate. But from the consumer’s point of view, being forced to pay high retail prices at a time when the economy is entering a recession is an unfair interference with free trade. There’s a most curious trend in science that has been significantly affecting the way we all think about the world. When I was young, people slaved away in laboratories and, when they came up with a chemical analysis, they would proudly talk in terms of 1 part per 100. Now, they apply a version of Moore’s Law, and seem worried that they are only able to measure in so few parts per tens of million.

Well, we should all sleep more soundly in our beds tonight. Science is on the trail. So let’s just imagine for a moment what this discovery means. You could test your baby boy on birth and, if it lacks the relevant genes, you could start the grieving process early. Perhaps you should buy stock in Merck & Co., the pharmaceutical company that makes propecia.

That way, when your offspring is old enough to give it business, you can get a dividend. I should make it clear that propecia is the best drug to treat male pattern baldness. Note it cannot be used by children (and women who always get left behind in research). Needless to say, it adversely affects women. So until these clever researchers find the way to turn off the switch that triggers male baldness, you will just have to rely on propecia. Before I go, I should make a slightly more serious point. The way in which genes interact to produce a physical result is extremely complicated. Under normal circumstances, I would deeply resent diverting valuable research time to a cosmetic condition.

McCain and the GOP on the defensive (again)

Some people have been looking at the voting records of both candidates in this year’s Presidential race — seems a little unfair. Not everyone votes according to their conscience when up on the Hill. But, hey, when news is in short supply, you go for the jugular with what you’ve managed to dig up from the past.

Seems that McCain has been voting against laws to force medical insurance companies to fund contraceptives. The argument is one of gender discrimination. The same insurers pay for Cialis when men ask for their pills. Why are women denied their pills when the men are back in action? “Ah ha,” you say, “these are two different things. Men need the pills to get back to work. Women are working just as God intended without the pills, thank you very much.”

Well, since Cialis works so well, this is adding to the world’s chronic overpopulation at a time when global warming is reducing food and water supplies. Millions of children die every year from malnutrition, thousands of women die from back-street abortions gone wrong.

But the most interesting ideas are the use of Cialis and nitrous oxide gas. Yes, friends, inhaling laughing gas makes you go faster, jump higher, and so on. The point is that both operate as vascular dilators — they open up your blood vessels. Blood flows increase and bring more oxygen to those working muscles faster. Buying drugs online is better say researchers

Shopping online is good because it’s convenient and your privacy is protected (most of the time). Whether people should be allowed to buy drugs over the internet is more controversial. So the Mayo Clinic Proceedings has just published some research from Utah. One thousand men with erectile dysfunction were divided into two groups. One bought Cialis online, the other went to see their local health providers. The results of the research make interesting reading.

The headline is that buying Cialis online was “safer”. Obviously, both groups got the drug in its full strength version. There were no problems in delivery. The key advantage to buying online lay in “patient education”. People buying online received targeted email messages about the product and how to use it safely. Combined with the more general introductory material available online, patients were better informed than those who went to see a physician. Amazingly less than half the patients who had a face-to-face discussion with their physician were given any instructions on how to use the medication safely.

It’s alarming that physicians should prove so bad at communicating with their patients. Some allowances can be made because those in general practice are under great pressure to see patients quickly. But, not to give proper directions on safety. . . Well, everyone should make the change. It’s official. Buying Cialis (or any drug for that matter) online is better. The research teams based at the University of Texas and Lilly Research Laboratories have just finished a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study into the use of Cialis. In ten countries, more than one thousand men participated being divided into five groups: one with the placebo, and the other four with different dosages of Cialis.

The results are impressive. The best performance came as the study proceeded into the third month from the men who took one 5mg tablet per day. As a side effect to this treatment, the men also found their sexual performance improved. Cialis does not remove the need to have surgery to remove the obstruction when it gets unmanageable But the all round quality of life is improved while waiting for surgery.
